(I posted this to the 29er crew site also…)

This past weekend was The Hardcore 24. One of my favorite events and which I’ve done very well at in the past few years (a 2nd and 2 Solo overall victories). Thus this time around I was out to defend my title and have some fun!

The course was relocated to a new venue, a shorter distance, but more technically demanding course on fairly new trails greeted the 20+ solo riders and the rest of the racers. Course was in primo shape bone dry and fast. I had put plenty of laps in during the prior months and even put in a few more the week leading up to the race.

All systems go, taper in full effect. Legs are ready, not much to do but pedal the superfly for the next 24 hours.

1st lap started with a prime of $100 for the fastest lap. I got kinda throttled in the singletrack of the start as I did no warm-up prior and the legs weren’t ready for the sprint at the start. But I was in the woods in about 6th place overall. I felt great and was flying and passed a few other riders and moved up into 3rd. I could see 1st and 2nd battling it out around the multiple corners. Got a few time checks that I was around 30 secs off the back. I knew it was going to take a monster effort to pull it back in such a short course and I decided to sit back and prep for the next 24 hours of racing. I ended up with the fastest solo lap and was 3rd across the line turning a 40 minute ish lap (32 sec down on 1st).

Felt really great on the 2nd lap settling in and turned a 43 minute lap and was feeling great.

I’d known storms were potentially coming our way, but had no idea what was coming our way. The rain, thunder, lighting and wind hit the course over the next 2-3 laps. It downpoured heavily and made the course just a muddy mess with the newer trails. Things were still rideable and fairly fast. Lap times slowed down a bit, but I had but some serious distance between myself and the other solo riders.

The rain finally stopped, but it left an extremely difficult course, thick mud and very greasy and tricky in the corners. I’d lost my granny ring due to the heavy mud, and was know walking the steeper climbs in order to conserve as much energy as possible. It became heavily draining, slowly grinding away in the mud (lots of the course was very slow speed uphill singletrack). I had a well established lead over the other riders and finally took a break to change after 8 laps.

Things were starting to dry out and firm up. Upon arising after sitting and eating some food, I stood up and my right knee popped hard. I let out a quick yelp, but didn’t think much of it. Not sure what I did, but I paid for it. During the next lap I could barely push the pedals as my right knee was aching terribly. Once I finished the lap, I came into the pits and iced it for a good 20 minutes, got some ibu and decided to test it. At this point it had swollen up a bit and I rode the first section of the course and decided my best bet was to pull the plug.

I was still in the lead which made it quite a downer, but there is a long season ahead! In the end I still managed to finish 3rd overall!! Many of the solo riders opted to sit out in the rain and wait till the course dried while I plugged away, so still pumped about that finish!

I headed over to Heil Ranch with Sonya via a few miles of road. Don’t let her fool ya, that chicka can throwdown when she needs to.

It was a slightly chilly but sunny day, and the trails were in great shape even after the snow.

Quick spin down Picture Rock and then back up. This section of trail was just rippingly fast.

Had a good ride with Sonya and she rewarded me with some super sweet homemade cookies post-ride.

The new fork was great, same fork, just brandy new. Like swapping from driving a Jeep to a Cadillac.

Good thing I had a cookie or two, cause the Lizzy Girl was super happy to go out for a short post-ride spin, and my dog promptly dropped me up the first hill. After repairing my confidence I made sure to drop her on the downhill

Just committed to this!!! 3 day Racing in Guatemala!!! Super psyched!

Quick spin tomorrow, might hook up with Mr. Kerkove for a quick spin, then head off to Vail to meet my family up from Georgia for some dinner.

Today was the “official” first day of my 2009 racing season. After a great week off, and spending loads of time with my new fiance Bridget, it’s time to chamois up and get ready for the program.

I’m really psyched for this off-season. Much more so than the past few years. Last year was quite abnormal and I really didn’t get the engine going until February/March. I even skipped the gym last year! This year though, I’m back in the gym and utilizing the tried and true FasCat program. I think 09 will be a great year. My CTL is at 60 to kick off the season, whereas last year it was at 9! That’s equivalent to a good 10-12 weeks of hard training. It also means my base fitness is quite higher this time around than last season. I was off the bike nearly 2 solid months last Fall, but not so this time around, I haven’t had this much desire or drive to excel in a few years, so I’m going to harness all that energy and focus on a few larger season goals. Racing kicks off again (well road) in only a few months!

Today kicked off the “adaptation” phase. I headed over to 24hour Fitness and joined up and dug my heels in for 10 weeks of weights. Sitting here I can feel that I was there as my legs are a little tired, hamstrings especially. After the gym, I headed home and pulled out the singlespeed. I put in about 2 hours of night riding as I headed over to Green Mt. The legs were a little sluggish, mostly from the weights earlier in the day, but I was getting a great force workout from climbing. I was going to head up box-o-rocks, but the 12 little beady eyes that reflected off my headlight, had me turning around and heading back home. Besides, the ss grind was catching and I’m sure I woulda been hosed (moreso than I currently am) after climbing that sufferfest.

My race calendar is slowly falling into place; Ouachita Challenge, Sea Otter, Mountain State Cup XC’s, Select NUE Series Races, 24hr of Summer Solstice and a few others, hell I may even race the road bike for fun a few times!

Should be in for a great season and super excited to be back on the Gary Fisher 29er Crew for 2009 again!! I love riding a 29er and not quite sure If I’d be able to even ride a kids bike again….

Currently playing in iTunes: Joy Ride by The Killers from Day & Age

Headed down to Northern, PA this morning for a little xc action. Having last weeks SM100 in my legs and a tough week of training, I knew the race was going to hurt.

This little guy gave me one of these so I could flog myself up the climbs

Race started out on a nice long 4 mile fire-road climb. Having never ridden the course, we were told it was about 3 miles. I paced and readied for 3 miles. Group quickly split into about 10 of us, shortly I was in the front group 4 of us and the chasers scattered. But soon, I popped off as it continually went up. The legs weren’t comfy nor was the taste of blood in my mouth. I was picked up by a few stragglers and slogged the last 3/4 mile up the climb and into the singletrack about 7th. Picked off a rider right away and set to work on chasing down another.

Headed into a straight down descent, just a chute literally, I was cooking and came up so fast on the rider, I put the brakes on but started sliding into him, had to lay it down. He for some reason looked back, then laid it down also. I managed to get up and drop him on the descent and out into the fire road climb.

Some fire road action and a long, straight fast descent had me increasing the gap. At the bottom was a slow grind against the grain in a techy creek side trail. Criss-crossing the trail and slowly heading uphill. I realized my saddle bag was open and had to stop, took a few secs to get the zipper to close fully and ended up losing a spot. Attempted to chase said rider in front of me, then we headed out to an open grass climb. 2-3 miles of uphill, wet tall grass. I was hating life and hating my legs for not wanting to put out a decent effort and give it a go. Ended up getting passed on the climb by a single speeder and was being chased down by 2 other riders.

I had only 1 bottle and saw an aid station, was super happy to refill and grab a few cups to slam. I had to let the 2 riders slip by, but gave chase. Dropped the 1st shortly, and the 2nd rider hung on. Pushing it in the singletrack and he kept sticking, attacked on the powerline downhill and got a gap, but he shortly closed it. I had to let him go by as my saddlebag was open again. I reached around and put everything in my pockets. (I’m done with saddle bags!)

I closed the gap back on the road, and into the gravel road, I was sitting about 20 yards back. I made a huge surge and caught him off-guard and dived into the singletrack. It was all slightly down and I was flying and floating. Caught and dropped the singlespeeder, and had about 5-10 secs on the rider chasing. Continually surging on the flat fast singletrack to try to increase my gap, it was holding steady. Shortly after though, it pointed down, straight down. I slammed it into gear and just let her rip. All out downhill high speed, flying and floating. Checked over the shoulder, no rider in sight, gotta push incase I flat. Check the computer, I’m close a few k away. Keep pushing, killing it and flying. Hit the dirt road and sprint the last 200 meters to the line. Rider shows up about a minute or 2 later. He was on a dualie, I was on the superfly. He said he never chased on the top because he thought he could catch me on the way down. No chance, nada gonna happen on a downhill at speed.

Ended up 7th overall/6th age group. 1 spot out of the money.

Back from Mount Snow, VT. Fresh from the green mountains of vermont. A bit tired and still not fully unpacked from the whirlwind that was the past 2 weeks of racing.

Ej at Crankskins was gracious enough to offer me a couch in exchange for working and helping out at the booth. I certainly hope it was a success for him. It’s a great product and I think with some time it will take off.

We arrived Wed Night, set up the booth then hit the course. I laid down 2 laps on the new style course. It was ok, nothing super special. But I preferred the older “original” course. This one just seemed a bit watered down. The climb was just one long climb to the top, and the descent was shortened up and missed out on some of the fun stuff. I rode the course a bit over the next few days and even managed to get in a decent road ride in.

I did end up signing up for a race. I forked over my $75 for the pro Super D. I ended up climbing up to the top of the mountain with Chris and we hit the course, it was a blast and not super technical. So on early sunday am, I got in line for the lift and headed to the top. On my practice run, I was feeling awesome and killing it. Then a few people were standing on the trail in a tight section, I torqued it and broke my chain. Luckily some guy in a Giant Jersey that won the race where you ride up and down the mountain gave me his tools (I didn’t have a chain breaker). I fixed the chain and finished my run.

I got in the huge line and got to move to the front as they were waiting for me at the top. On my way up, I chatted it up on the lift with the chick who would go on to win the really hard race where you ride for only 20 minutes. Funny, I didn’t even know who she was. As I was the last rider to line up, I had a crappy starting spot. The run sucked and I was pretty much fighting it out for last place. Running, especially with your bike uphill is not fun. Seeing as I was so far back, I basically just sat in and didn’t try to kill myself or anyone else by trying to make some crazy passes. On the homestretch, I was fighting for 3rd to last and managed to just stack it around 35mph on a huge waterbar. I landed on my head, and bounced a few times. It was right in front of everyone. It was awesome. I haven’t had a crazy crash like that in so long. I wish I woulda crashed a few times in practice, I kinda enjoy being sore from a good crash (I’m a sadist). Anyways after a few people came over to see if I was still alive (or just working on an audition for superman) I got back on and finished up. Dead last! Awesome. Did I mention I did this on a hardtail, while everyone else was pretty much on 5-inch dual squish? I gotta get some street cred for that, right?

I’ll have some pictures up later tonight.

The Hardcore 24 was this past weekend. I raced the solo category for my 4th SOLO 24 hour event. I finished 2nd overall at the even 2 years ago with 16 laps and last year had turned in 9 laps before the race was called. My goal this time out was to turn in 20 laps and keep consistent.

The first few laps, my energy was good and strong. Even with the poor weather and amounts of rain, I was still motivated and ready to race. I ran consistent and actually geared down on the climbs so I wouldn’t exert a tremendous amount of energy early. I kept myself in check even though, I really did want to race like it was a 6 hour event. I turned a good first lap, and was the first solo to cross the line and one of the top 5? riders. I grabbed my first feed and kept on moving. I banged out the next few laps and early on was hesitating to take a feed at the midway point of the course. I was using sustained energy and my bottle still had plenty, but after a few laps I wasn’t making it to the end of the lap and started grabbing feeds swinging through the pits.

Turning and Burning

After I finished my 6th lap, I came into the pits for a short break. I ate a delicious turkey and mayo sandwich, grabbed some advil, got the drivetrain cleaned and headed out after a few minutes of my feet and the saddle. It was somewhere around this point that 2nd place had closed the gap on me. I saw him in a few spots and pushed it in the singletrack, but eventually he managed to get a gap and get away from me. After running a few solid night laps, I had pulled him back in and eventually passed him. My plan at 10 laps in (10:30pm) was to take a solid rest, change into some dry clothing and give the bike a good overhaul. The muddy conditions were taking it’s toll on the bike and a fresh set of clothes and the iPod were what I was looking forward to. I managed to break my front brake lever when I hit a tree a few laps prior. It was functioning, but needed a few zip ties to hold it together properly. A cleaning of the bike made a huge difference in the shifting and dry clothes never felt better. Another turkey and mayo sandwich and I was back out on the the course.

Grabbing a feed at the midway point

I was feeling great, I swapped to coke and water for my feeds. Was eating gels and clif bloks and my energy levels were up. I buried myself for a bit as I had been overtaken during my long break. I ran a bunch of consistent laps and held strong all through the night. I pulled back into 1st and was keeping tabs on my time checks. Sometime around 4am, I pulled into the pits to take a quick 5 min break, get the bike cleaned and eat another turkey sandwich. I emerged feeling great and still had a decent gap on 2nd.

Dawn brought newfound energy and resilience. I was motivated and hungry at this point. I still was feeling great and working hard. I was getting consistent time checks at the midway and end of each laps. I was putting almost 10 minutes per lap into 2nd. My pace was holding up and I wasn’t losing time. Adrenaline was flowing and I was feeling great. Around 10am, I was up somewhere around the 40 minute range and disaster struck. Horrible pains in the tendons behind my left knee. Top of my calf and lower quad, were burning. I was babying my left leg and having trouble putting power down on the climbs. I gritted my teeth, pushing my bike up each steep climb and trying to make the time up on the descents.

Consistency is key, while hr was dropping each lap, my power levels pretty much remained the same. I averaged 1:07 per lap!

Hoping my time gap would stick and I could grind it out till the end. I crossed the line and headed out for my 19th lap, knowing I could finish it, but could I finish a 20th and could I ‘race’ for position? My gap was still in the mid 40′s at the start of the lap. Suzanne actually caught and passed me, knowing I was in pain, hoping it wasn’t going to be a “24 Solo” incident. I focused everything I had on finishing that 19th lap, and when I came through the halfway point, 2nd placed had conceded and was no longer on course. Man, was I exalted at that point. I lagged up the long climb and walked a few portions of the trail to ease the pain in my leg, but slammed it on the descent and back to the finish line. I checked to make sure I didn’t need to go out for another and headed to the pits, only had to wait an hour and I could cross the line 1 final time for victory!!!

I had an excellent pit crew to help me out. My mother was there for every need for all 24 hours, at every lap and midway point when we swung through the pits. Jeremy (camp manager) took care of setting up the camp on Friday and taking care of my bike along with Dave the mother-f’in man. Special thanks also to Wendy, Val, Doyle and everyone else that was there and helped out.

Ma hands off another feed as I ready for another lap

Also a Huge thanks to my sponsors! Gary Fisher for making the best and fastest bike ever, the Superfly. Who says you can’t race a hardtail at a 24 hour race? The Geneva Bicycle Center, taking care of my bike maintenance and accessory needs. EJ at Crankskins.com for pimping me some fat 29er Crew Custom Crankskins. Jeff at Ergon Grips for Keeping my hands comfy the whole race. Also thanks to Ay-Up Lighting for making some bright and lightweight lights, making it easy to see at night and not having to worry about carrying any extra weight. And a big thanks to Park Ave Bikes for putting on the race!

Huge Congrats also to Mark and Suzanne Hartman of the 29er Crew for not only taking the mixed doubles win, but the doubles overall!!! Also Congrats to Casey Conte and Matt Hanggi for taking the doubles win and 2nd doubles overall!!

Farmall #2 is tonight. Hopefully, I can flip some things around and stay near the front this time. I’ve got my new toy to help me out. I picked up my power tap disc on from the GBC on thursday and today will be the first day out on it. I’m gonna head to dryer prior to the race and put in some time and a few laps to loosen the legs up after this weekend. I was a little lazy and the rain kept me bundled up inside the past few days.

I’ll treat you to the pics though! It’s oh so pretty!

Back home after the Sea Otter. For the race report and some pics, etc go here. I’m pretty bushwacked. I didn’t have my best race, but not at all concerned about it. I’ll see some good gains from the fitness of 4 days of riding. Plus I got to ride with Gary Fisher, meet some cool people and rock the California singletrack!!

The Superfly easily conquered the dry, sandy, wide-open course. Yesterday, I put it back together and did a quick ride out to glenwood so that Lizzy could get a nice run in. Not that she didn’t get a nice run in this past week. According to my sister, she let her out for a bit and lizzy disappeared. A few hours later, my boss called and she had shown up for work!! I wonder if I get actual pay for her showing up in my stead rather than vacation pay? She was rather mopey while I was gone, so the run did her good.

What’s with this weather? Not complaining at all, but rather enjoying it. Seems like everything is up and blooming as compared to dull and dreary when I left.

I learned a good little lesson while out west. Don’t drink 4 margaritas the size of your head the evening after the race. The hippie and I headed out for some post race celebration at the local mexican restaurant down the block from the hotel. A few drinks later, I vaguely remember making it back to the desk and asking the clerk to help me to my room. The time between dinner and then, well let’s just say the memory card was full and stopped recording. I fared a little better than the hippie though, he was found wandering around the village, in his socks. Somehow he lost his shoes. The local pd, picked him up and were kind enough to take him back to the hotel and not have any issues with it at all. It was all good, except I lost my f@cking iPhone!!! somewhere in the mix!! Guess that’s my punishment…and believe me I paid during the 8 hours of traveling home the next day.

I’m working on getting the video of my ride on the Sea Otter course converted up and chopped down into something a bit smaller so I can upload it……
